The aesthetics, cinematography, and Singh’s depiction of the evil Khilji were lauded by critics, but the plot, execution, length, and adherence to regressive patriarchal mores were panned. Critics have objected to the characterization of Khilji as a stereotypical evil Muslim king and Ratan Singh as a holy Hindu king, prompting religious groups to protest. Padmaavat received the most nominations and won four awards, including Best Actor for Singh, at the 64th Filmfare Awards. It also won Bhansali three National Film Awards, including Best Music Direction.
