“Jingle Bells” is one of the most well-known and widely performed American songs. It was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published in the autumn of 1857 under the title “The One Horse Open Sleigh.” It’s been suggested that the song was composed for a Sunday school choir or as a drinking song.It became synonymous with Christmas music and the holiday season in the 1860s and 1870s, and it was used in a number of parlor song and college anthologies in the 1880s, despite having no original relation to Christmas. It was first recorded on an Edison cylinder in 1889; this recording, which is thought to be the first Christmas record, is lost, although an 1898 Edison Records recording survives.
