“Naina” is a song from the soundtrack of the Indian feature film Dangal. Arijit Singh sings it, with music by Pritam Chakraborty and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Dangal is a 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Aamir Khan through his production company Aamir Khan Productions in collaboration with UTV Motion Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures India. Aamir Khan plays Mahavir Singh Phogat, a pehlwani amateur wrestler who trains his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari to become India’s best wrestlers. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra play the adult versions of the two Phogat sisters, while Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar play their younger counterparts, Sakshi Tanwar plays their mother, and Aparshakti Khurana plays their cousin. The film’s production started in early 2013 when Tiwari began writing the screenplay. Khan interviewed the Phogat sisters on his talk show Satyamev Jayate in 2014 before Tiwari approached him with the script months later, and Khan took over as lead actor and director. Principal photography began in September 2015 in the neighboring Indian state of Punjab, with the film mainly set in the Indian state of Haryana. Satyajit Pande directed the film, and Ballu Saluja edited it. Pritam composed the film’s background music as well as the soundtrack, with lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Dangal was released worldwide on December 23, 2016, following a North American premiere on December 21, 2016. The film earned positive reviews from critics, with praise focusing on the film’s “honest” portrayal of a true-life story and Khan’s performance. It was also shown at the Beijing International Film Festival in April 2017, as well as the second BRICS festival in June 2017.
